Secure your home

General

  • Make sure you lock your doors and shut windows when you're not at home.
  • Keep your keys safe and only share them with people you trust. If you happen to lose the key to your home, we can organise for a replacement key to be cut, but please note this will cost you $20, to pay for the cutting of the key and our administrative costs.
  • You are responsible for the contents of your home - if they are damaged by an event such as a fire, or stolen, they are not covered by the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust's insurance. We recommend you organise your own contents insurance.

If you're going away

  • Make sure doors are locked and windows secured.
  • Ask a neighbour to collect your mail from the letterbox and clear the letterbox of any advertising flyers.
  • Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home while you're away.
  • You can make your house look lived in by hanging some washing on the line, or putting shoes by the front and back doors.

If you're going away, ask a neighbour to clear your letterbox so it looks as if someone is at home.
